For special events Voces Intimae appears as an ensemble, as for the collaboration with the Rome Opera House in the creation of new ballet productions.
Voces Intimae has recently signed a new contract with Challenge Classics. The first release is the premiere worldwide recording on period instruments of the Robert Schumann piano trios op.63 & 110. The trio’s previous recording of the complete edition of the trios of J.N. Hummel on Warner Classics, again on period instruments, was awarded “Critics CD of the Year 2006” and “CD of the Week” by BBC Radio3’s CD Review, “Choice of the Month” by BBC Music Magazine and “Cdécisif” by the Radio Suisse Romande. Voces Intimae has also recorded the trios of Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn Bartoldy, as well as a selection of a rare repertoire of 19th century Fantasias based on the operas of Vincenzo Bellini, all on period instruments.
Press quotations on the Trio include: “…quality performance…” Il Venerdì de La Repubblica – Enzo Siciliano; “…a performance of inspired clarity and subtle expression, characterized by a transparent interpretation and flawless intonation…” The Strad; “…Their readings, tasty and sophisticated, have an exquisite and friendly spirit, that easily affects the listener…” Suonare – A. Foletto; “…the colours and distinctive voices of Voces Intimae are a revelation” BBC Music Magazine – George Pratt; “…I think that this Trio will go far…” RAI Radio3 – Mattino Tre – G. Zaccagnini; “…A great disc!..” De Morgen – Rudy Tambuyser; “….Voces Intimae restores to this music all its poetry and transparency…” Le Monde de la Musique – Vincent Casanova; “…Three excellent interpreters…” 5 stars Amadeus – Massimo Rolando Zegna.
The aim of the trio is to restore the music to the purity of its original form, and to realise the true intentions of the composer in their production of tone and phrasing. Thus, they hope to bring the authentic historical context back to life in their performance of the music. The name Voces Intimae was chosen to convey the trio’s sensitivity to the subtleties of the repertoire, preferring, for instance, to highlight the delicate suggestion of a horse’s trotting gait in the rhythm of a passage of music, rather than thoughtlessly articulating it in a manner recalling the sound of a round of artillery. In this way, the group allows the subtle complexities, the delicate and ever-shifting shades of colour, and the streaks of melancholy running through the music to shine through, all aspects which were often neglected during the 20th century.
The intent of the Trio is to restore the music to its original transparency, to try to make evident the original intentions of the composers through sound and phrasing, and bring to light the history that is tied to the piece. The choice of the name, Voces Intimae, confirms the group’s aim to enhance the more subtle aspects of the repertoire without being obliged to sound like a “round of artillerary”, but rather to show the rhythm of horse trot and the favouring of the more subtle undertones, the understated, and the veins of melancholy, all aspects that during the 20th century were often deserted.
